Description: This position performs building inspections to enforce applicable building and zoning codes and ordinances.

Examples of Duties

Inspects all aspects of new and remodeled commercial and residential construction to ensure compliance with all adopted construction codes and related zoning ordinances.

Completes inspections and re-inspections; schedules meetings with contractors; records and documents all inspection activities, deficiencies and corrections.

Responds to complaints from the public regarding the application of codes and ordinances.

Reviews plans, blueprints, and addenda to ensure compliance with submitted documents and applicable codes and ordinances.

Contacts owners, contractors, design professionals and homeowners to discuss violations of code and city ordinances and provide direction and assistance to make the appropriate corrective actions to ensure compliance; generates correction letters and/or notices and orders as required.

Performs related duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid drivers license issued by the State of North Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Possession of a current International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Building Inspector within twelve months of the date of employment. Employees performing electrical or plumbing inspections must also hold a current State of North Dakota master or journeyman license in the applicable field.
